Self-care is often overlooked, particularly in these busy, fast-paced and modern times, but just what is self-care?
Self-care is a conscious act of taking time to care for ourselves physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally.
The University of Canterbury (n.d) outlines self-care as being unique to each individual, with everyone having their own approach. That this concept involves the daily practices you engage in to support your well-being.
So, how do we take time to include self-care into our lives? Well, maybe you already incorporate aspects of this concept into your life already, but perhaps you don't realise it.
It could be the act of sitting outside and enjoying a good book, it could be taking a moment to say a karakia or prayer to start your day, it could involve snuggling with your pet. Self-care is about you taking time to do something consciously that you find joy in.
Personally, I love to make tea. The process of tea making is very relaxing for me. I also take comfort in stormy weather by sitting near a window and just hearing and seeing the rain fall.
So how might we take care of ourselves physically mentally, spiritually and emotionally?
Physically - this could include going for a walk, going to the gym, doing an online or in-person yoga session, or just dancing to a song we really love.
Mentally - self-care in relation to our mental wellbeing could include doing a gratitude journal, reading a book, doing a puzzle, or taking a moment away from our phones.
Spiritually - this could include a karakia or a prayer, a meditation or going on a nature walk.
Emotionally - one could include mindfulness through deep, slow breathing, again perhaps some journaling, or embracing moments to just be and enjoy the stillness.
If connecting with others through spending time with friends and/or family brings you happiness, then continue to nurture those beautiful relationships you have.
The concept of doing things consciously is something we often forget about but is beneficial if we remind ourselves and are aware of this concept. It's another topic I will talk about in a future blog post.
I hope you all enjoyed this short post regarding self-care, and I also hope that you all are able to take time in your day to take care of yourselves through incorporating meaningful moments that fill you with joy.
